Day 173 - Dried Anchovy Curry and Rice

We are having calm hot days and totally crazy nights with thunderstorms and heavy rain. I’ve been waiting for summer to make this curry with dried anchovies, as I don’t want to have the fish smell lingered to my house during winter. I had to open all the windows and doors along with the exhaust to ward off all the fish smell. Dried fish curries are very common in my hometown and it has been a delicacy and comfort food for many people. Believe me, it’s been ages since I had this dish. This time when I saw dried anchovies at the Asian superstore, I couldn’t resist buying it and finally it was today that I made dried anchovies in coconut gravy and served it with white rice. My hubby doesn’t like anchovies let alone dried ones, so he had grilled steak. While having this, I kept saying to my hubby “You are missing something very delicious”. And he kept staring at me when I kept licking my fingers and making the Hmm sound, this dish is in deed a true delicacy!

Recipe

Adopted from this Original Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Dry Anchovies- 1 cup
  • Oil- 2 tbsp
  • Chilly powder- 1 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
  • Ginger, minced - 2 tsp
  • Onion, chopped - 1
  • Tomato, chopped-1
  • Curry leaves- 1 sprig
  • Water- 1/4 cup

To grind:

  • Grated coconut- 1/2 cup
  • Yogurt- 3 tbsp
  • Dried anchovies- 4 no’s
Preparation:
  1. Shallow fry the dry anchovies in little oil and keep aside.
  2. Heat a pan, add oil, chilly powder, turmeric powder, saute for a second without burning it.
  3. Add minced ginger, chopped onion and tomato, saute till tomato gets mashed up.
  4. In a blender, grind above mentioned ingredients to grind to a smooth paste.
  5. Add this coconut paste to onion mixture, cook for 3 minutes.
  6. Add fried anchovies, curry leaves and water.
  7. Cook covered for 5 minutes.
  8. Serve with white or red rice.
